CALIS, Nr FETHIYE TURKEY

Calis is a quiet yet busy holiday resort, with a seemingly endless beach. Bars and restaurants line the beach area, which is block paved along the seafront. The resort is very flat, so is ideal for people with mobility restrictions. Calis has it's own waterpark too. Parts of the beach are also popular with the local turtle population, who come in to lay their eggs in the sand and the surf shack provides all the water sports facilities for the active holidaymaker

Calis also boasts two very natural attractions - a cooling breeze, perfect for when the local temperatures soar in the summer months, and you can see what the other one is - Calis is famous for some of the most beautiful sunsets in the World.

Resorts Location:

In SW Mediterranean Turkey, in the region of Fethiye. Fethiye town 2 miles; Olu Deniz 9 miles. 38 miles east of Dalaman airport by winding, scenic road.

General Description:

A rather quieter resort than some, with small hotels in a row along the seafront, it has a mainly pedestrianised boulevard with limited traffic access. Overall, the resort has a low-key, laid-back atmosphere but the variety in bars and restaurants appeals to all ages.

Beaches:

A long, narrow arc of dark sand and shingle lined with sun loungers and shades extends round a broad bay with sheltered waters. Safe to swim; some water sports offered. Turtles lay eggs in the sand at certain times of the year.

Market/Suitability:

For those seeking a beach location and a compact, easily accessible resort. Some nightlife, but plentiful transport to nearby Fethiye town, which has a greater selection.

Shopping:

A small selection of shops with jewellery, clothes, shoes, beachwear and water-sports equipment. Many small, well-stocked minimarkets. Souvenirs and local handicrafts; plentiful spices, teas and Turkish delight. Fethiye town has abundant shops and a large covered market (Tuesdays). Every Sunday there is also a very large market in Calis.

Entertainments:

Daytime: some water sports, including surfing. Horse riding. Turkish baths and massage. Aqua park with slides and fitness centre. Good selection of tours to nearby islands; fishing; shark fishing.

Nightlife:

More low-key, with a good selection of bars, cafes and cocktail bars, many on the beachfront boulevard and with bay views. A couple of nightclubs in Calis itself. Larger hotels offer seasonal evening entertainments with live music and often belly-dancing. More active nightlife can be had in nearby Fethiye town or Hisoranu.

Eating out:

Ample choice of restaurants, cafes and snack bars serving local and Turkish fare, seafood or Italian dishes. Pizza. English breakfasts for the homesick. Restaurants line the beachfront boulevard, offering airy dining with fine views of bay.
